The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE), announces a vacancy for the position of Development Director based in Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District, Belize.
Qualifications of the Development Director
Required qualifications:
- A minimum three years’ experience, with demonstrated success in non-profit fundraising.
- Excellent writing, organizational, inter-personal and strategic thinking skills.
- A passion for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
- A good quality bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. fundraising, communications, English, environmental science, international development, etc.).
- A sound understanding of environmental / development issues.
- Initiative, energy, enthusiasm, creativity and drive.
The following would be desirable:
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
- Knowledge of the funding landscape in Latin American and/or the Caribbean, and contacts within the funding world.

Position Description: Development Director | |
Position Summary | Lead TIDE’s fundraising efforts to ensure adequate finances for effective operation of the organization. Participate in the strategic planning and financial sustainability of all Protected Areas managed by TIDE, including close collaboration with the Financial Sustainability Manager to implement TIDE’s financial sustainability strategy. Participate in TIDE’s infrastructure development planning and projects in partnership with Program Director. As Development Director, represent TIDE and build strategic partnerships with outside agencies that support TIDE’s operational and financial stability, and as part of the TIDE management team, provide technical assistance to colleagues and partners in a collaborative and open manner. DD will cover the development and networking aspects of ED’s position in their absence. |
Working Relationships | Reporting to: Executive Director. Work closely with executive director in all development efforts. Responsible for: Supervise development professionals in grant writing; supervise Financial Sustainability Manager (FSM) to implement financial sustainability strategy. |
| GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES |

TRP 3.7 | FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT 1. Refine TIDE’s fundraising strategy and oversee its implementation. The strategy involves a mix of traditional grant-writing, establishing an individual donor program, board fundraising, and overseeing establishment of mission-related businesses. 2. In collaboration with the ED and with input from colleagues and stakeholders, identify, direct, and develop proposals to statutory funders, private foundations, and corporate sponsors to secure funds for TIDE’s programmatic and administrative needs, in alignment with TIDE’s strategic plans and using recognized formats and processes. 3. Research new funding prospects and cultivate relationships to build and diversify TIDE’s donor base. 4. Secure the services of a second development professional who will assist with development related duties. 5. Support the board of directors in building a committed and effective fundraising sub-committee. 6. Work with the FSM to ensure implementation of components from the Sustainable Financing Strategy (2023-2027), including overseeing the development of at least two new sustainable financing mechanisms to support TIDE’s work. 7. Support the FSM in establishment of partnerships and agreements with communities and businesses for tourism and recreation development. 8. Support ED in performing due diligence for all donors to ensure all funding is legitimate and aligned with TIDE mission and vision. |
ORG 3.2 FRM 3.6 FRM 3.2 | PLANNING · Participate in the preparation of 5-year strategic plans and 3-year operational plans for the organization. · In collaboration with ED, PD, and Managers, establish procedures for strategic planning and adaptive management of protected areas. · In collaboration with PA Manager, Program Director, and Operations Manager identify and secure physical resources required for protected areas management. · In partnership with the ED, FSM, and Program Director, lead the preparation of organizational business plans and sustainable financing plans, including the development of TIDE’s mission-related businesses, and mobilize resources to establish / grow these businesses. |
HRM 3.1/3.4/2.4 HRM 2.2 | PERSONNEL · Assist management team in identifying personnel needs and structures for PA administration. Identify training and capacity development needs of TIDE personnel, using donor guidelines, and in coordination with PD, plan, budget, and procure funding required to implement personnel needs and staff training. · Supervise, motivate, and evaluate performance of development team, including conducting an annual performance evaluation of staff under your supervision based on established policies and procedures. |
ORG 3.5 | PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKING · In partnership with the ED build networks and develop collaborative relationships with other organizations. –Enhance the organization’s public relations by actively participating in meetings, conferences and workshops related to TIDE’s mission. · Assume the Networking-related responsibilities of the Executive Director in her/his absence (OM covers operations and HR, PD covers Program-related). |
| REPORTING Collaborate with ED in production of quarterly development progress reports for the Board of Directors. |
