From May 5th to 10th, TIDE
research team conducted monitoring and exploratory dives at the established
Fish Spawning Aggregation Sites (FSA) within the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve
(SCMR). The aim of this research is to increase knowledge of spawning
aggregations of commercially important species in Belize, including the Nassau
grouper, recognized as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List. FSA sites
hold vital importance, serving to replenish and maintain productive reef
fisheries. It’s for this reason that it is illegal to catch Nassau grouper
smaller than 20in and larger than 30in.
Our consistent monitoring confirms that these
reef areas are active Fish Spawning Aggregation sites. Conserving these areas
helps to ensure that these fisheries remain sustainable over the long term,
providing a reliable source of food and income for neighbouring communities as
well as protecting the health of the entire marine ecosystem by preserving high
biodiversity.
