Ranger Vacancy

The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment announces that a vacancy exists for the post of RANGER for TIDE’s Private Protected Lands in Southern Belize, Toledo District, Belize.  Applicants must live in Toledo.  Please see application instructions below.

 
Position Summary Your overall responsibility is to support the Head Ranger and Protected Area Manager in ensuring the smooth and effective operation of resource protection for TIDE’s Private Protected Lands.  This includes patrol and law enforcement duties, as well as ensuring the security and safety of visitors to the protected area.  You will uphold maintenance standards for the ranger station and surrounding areas and use and maintain all equipment appropriately. As a TIDE ranger, you will participate in research related to the PA and prepare various reports as required by the supervisor. As a member of the TIDE team, you are expected to continually improve your ranger skills by seeking out formal and informal training from Head Ranger and other TIDE staff.  You will have a basic understanding of the local ecosystems and be able to identify and protect different animals and plants as needed.  Your workstation will be the TIDE ranger station at TIDE’s Private Protected Lands when on duty.

 

Working Relationships Reporting to: Immediate supervisor is Head Ranger, OR PA Manager when head ranger is off duty.

Close working relationships with:  Work closely with TIDE’s partner organization personnel assigned to the protected area.

 

  GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Under the direction of the Head Ranger and/or Protected Area Manager, carry out daily patrols within the Protected Area using SMART system, as well as special strategic patrols as assigned.

2.      Follow all the standard operating procedures of the protected area.

3.      Safely operate and properly maintain all equipment, instruments, and machinery, including but not limited to motor vehicles, boats, outboard engines, compressor, dive tanks, GPS units, computers, power tools, communication equipment and other equipment and instruments.

4.      Complete basic construction tasks at the protected area as well as landscaping, horticultural and silvicultural tasks.

5.      Provide logistical support and general assistance to TIDE research team and TIDE Tours activities within the protected area.

6.      Participate in research activities, including collection of data as required, for the protected area, including Bird banding etc.

7.      In the absence of the Head Ranger, prepare and submit weekly report according to format established by PA Manager.

8.      Assist with wildland fire management activities when requested.

9.      Build and maintain trails, signs etc.

10.   Establish and maintain reforestation sites.

11.   Responsible to take advantage of training opportunities on a regular basis, including internal and informal training from Head Ranger and PA Manager and other TIDE staff.

  

SAFETY AND SECURITY

12.   Uphold the security of the ranger station and all other TIDE facilities for TIDE’s Private Protected Lands.

13.   Respond to emergency calls from all staff and resource users of all protected areas managed by TIDE, in a timely manner.

14.   Adhere to good safety and environmental practice in the field and the workplace, including the aquatic environment.

15.   Conduct first aid and provide appropriate responses in accidents and emergencies.

16.   Participate in search and rescue and emergency response along with relevant staff.

LAW ENFORCEMENT:

1.      Assist Head Ranger and PA Manager to ensure compliance of the protected area regulations. Identify, record, and report signs and evidence of unauthorised activities and security threats as they arise.

2.      Participate with partner agencies and other TIDE Staff in supervised law enforcement operations in compliance with standard operating procedures and follow all legal, ethical and safety procedures when apprehending suspects, violators and detainees.

3.      Follow correct procedures for basic documenting and reporting on law enforcement activities particularly as they relate to protecting crime scenes and for seizing and securing evidence.

4.      Provide formal evidence (written and verbal) in official investigations and court procedures as required.

5.      Ensure suspects and members of the public are treated according to existing laws during law enforcement activities.

6.      Provide information to protected area users about laws, rights and regulations affecting the protected area and ensure adequate response to non-violent disputes and confrontations, as well as correctly and appropriately to physical threats and attacks.

 

  VISITORS, TOURISM, AND OUTREACH

1.      Welcome, assist, and regulate visitors on site.  Ensure proper documentation and security of all guests to the protected area and take visitors on tours when asked by manager.

2.      Where required, provide visitors with user fee tickets, collect fees and ensure all monies are documented and stored safely in accordance with TIDE Policies and Procedures.

3.      Make presentations about the management of the protected area and basic interpretive/educational topics about the Protected Area to a range of visitors and audiences based on a script provided.

4.      With guidance from the Education and Outreach Coordinator and the Head Ranger and/or PA Manager, communicate and interact appropriately with resource users.

5.      Work with BTB and law enforcement personnel to regulate tourism within the protected area.

TECHNOLOGY AND DATA MANAGEMENT

1.      Operate and maintain computers for basic offline functions (word processing, data entry, file management).

2.      Use online and other connected communication equipment and media.

3.      Operate and maintain audio visual equipment.

4.      Use map and compass/charts for orientation and navigation as well as operate a Global Positioning System (GPS) (and related applications) for orientation and various field applications.

RECORDS AND REPORTING

1.      Make regular verbal and written reports to the Head Ranger and/or PA Manager.  These include weekly surveillance- patrol reports, engine, fuel, boat check reports, and visitor reports, among others.

2.      Keep track of receipts and invoices for expenditures and other financial transactions.

ECOSYSTEM UNDERSTANDING AND PROTECTION

1.      Recognise and identify typical ecosystems, habitats, plant and animal species   and their signs in the field and recognise threats and problems affecting biodiversity in the field. Accurately record and report observations of wildlife, habitats and ecosystems as required by TIDE PA manager.

2.      Assist in the control, capture, handling and transportation of animals for relocation, population management, or invasive species control, and with guidance from the PA Manager, care for flora under protection in the Protected Area.

  ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Uphold the good housekeeping of the ranger station and cleanliness of areas surrounding the station and dock.

2.      When needed you may be called upon to assist the managers of the other TIDE protected areas.

3.      Actively participate in meetings, workshops, and trainings, related to the management of the protected area.

4.      Perform any other incidental and job-related duties as required and assigned by supervisor.

 

Education and experience:

  1. Secondary School Diploma required
  2. Boating skills required
  3. Drivers permit and Boat Captain skills, desired
  4. Technology use: knowledge of SMART, GPS, drones, MS Office
  5. Practical experience with GPS and marine/terrestrial navigation, preferred
  6. First Aid Certification, preferred, required after employment
  7. Small engine repair experience desired
  8. Must have law enforcement knowledge
  9. Professional work ethics, Good public relations skills, Self-motivated
