Wildlife Empathy Training

Wildlife Empathy Training

TIDE’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, Federico Caal, recently participated in a valuable two-day training session on “Empathy for Wildlife” at the Belize Zoo (January 29-30).

Facilitated by Isabelle Herde from the Zoological Society of Milwaukee, the training covered best practices in environmental education, drawing from the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) guidelines.

Federico gained practical experience through indoor and outdoor sessions, learning effective strategies for fostering empathy for wildlife across different age groups. He connected with fellow environmental educators, opening doors for future collaborations.

A highlight of the training was Federico’s experience handling a boa constrictor. “At first, I was afraid,” he shared, “but by the end, it was a soothing experience. We should be gentle with all wildlife. They won’t harm us unless they feel threatened. They need us to be their voice.” Federico plans to share his new knowledge with stakeholders in and around TIDE’s four protected areas in southern Belize, promoting harmonious coexistence with nature.

TIDE encourages all Belizeans to exercise caution on highways, especially in animal crossing zones, and to plant trees to provide habitat for local wildlife.
