This week PACT’s Executive Director, Mr. Abil Castañeda and several key staff joined TIDE to visit farmers affected by last year’s fire to find out first-hand how TIDE were involved in the 2024 community effort to out fires in the community of San Pedro Columbia. The group were also joined by a team from the Press Office for the Government of Belize.
PACT’s Executive Director, Mr. Abil Castañeda discusses the purpose of the visit.
Mr. Jorge Coc, 1st Alcalde of San Pedro Columbia Village recounted some of his experiences fighting fire with his fellow villagers and TIDE’s fire crew last year.
Mr. Christopher Nesbitt and Ms. Celini Nesbitt describe the fire raging around their house and steps TIDE’s fire crew took to protect them during the 2024 fire season.
Recognizing the vital importance of TIDE’s efforts, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) has stepped forward to support the work undertaken during last fire season. This support includes assisting with the repair of damaged tools and the purchase of new equipment, which will be critical should similar large-scale challenges arise in Toledo due to weather conditions.
TIDE sees the need for a well-trained and equipped community members throughout Toledo, but we acknowledge it will take time to reach this long term goal.
The progress made in recent months is a big step in the right direction and we are thankful to PACT for the support.
