VACANCY For MARINE RANGER

The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE), announces a vacancy for the position of ONE RANGER for Port Honduras Marine Reserve.  Applicants must live in Toledo.  Please see application instructions below.

Position Description:  Ranger
Position Summary Your overall responsibility is to support the Head Ranger and Manager in ensuring the smooth and effective operation of resource protection within the Protected Area and fish spawning aggregation sites (FSAs).  This includes patrol and law enforcement duties, as well as ensuring the security and safety of visitors to the protected area. You will uphold maintenance standards for the ranger station and surrounding areas and use and maintain all of TIDE’s equipment appropriately. You will have a basic working understanding of the local ecosystems and be able to identify and protect different animals and plants as needed.  Your workstation will be the ranger station of the respective Protected Area when on duty.
Working Relationships Reporting to: Immediate supervisor is Head Ranger or manager when head ranger is off duty.

Close working relationships with: Managers of Protected Area to ensure smooth and effective functioning of all activities within the reserve.

Work closely with TIDE’s partner organization personnel assigned to Protected Area.

1.      Under the direction of the Head Ranger and/or Manager, carry out daily patrols within Protected Area using SMART system, as well as special strategic patrols as assigned.

2.      Follow all TIDE standard operating procedures whilst in the field.

3.      Safely operate and properly maintain all equipment, instruments, and machinery, including but not limited to motor vehicles, boats, outboard engines, compressor, dive tanks, GPS units, computers, power tools, communication equipment and other equipment and instruments.

4.      Complete basic construction tasks at Ranger Station as well as landscaping, horticultural and silvicultural tasks.

5.      Provide logistical support and general assistance to TIDE research team at Protected Area.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

6.      Uphold the security of TIDE’s assets at Ranger Station.

7.      Respond to emergency calls from staff and stakeholders within Protected Area.

8.      Adhere to good safety and environmental practice in the field and the workplace, including the aquatic environment.

9.      Conduct first aid and provide appropriate responses in accidents and emergencies.

10.   Participate in search and rescue and emergency response along with relevant staff.

LAW ENFORCEMENT:

1.      Assist Head Ranger and Manager to ensure compliance of the marine reserve regulations by users of the Protected Area and determined FSA sites. Identify and report signs and evidence of unauthorised activities and security threats as they arise.

2.      Participate with partner agencies and other TIDE Staff in supervised law enforcement operations in compliance with standard operating procedures and follow all legal, ethical and safety procedures when apprehending suspects, violators, and detainees.

3.      Follow correct procedures for basic documenting and reporting on law enforcement activities particularly as they relate to protecting crime scenes and for seizing and securing evidence.

4.      Provide formal evidence (written and verbal) in official investigations and court procedures as required.

5.      Ensure suspects and members of the public are treated correctly and legally during law enforcement activities.

6.      Provide information to protected area users about laws, rights and regulations affecting Protected Area and research sites and ensure adequate response to non-violent disputes and confrontations, as well as correctly and appropriately to physical threats and attacks.

  OUTREACH:

·        Deliver presentations on the management of the Protected Area and basic interpretive/educational topics about Protected Area to a range of visitors and audiences based on a script provided.

·        With guidance from the Education and Outreach Coordinator and the Head Ranger and Manager, communicate and interact appropriately with resource users.

TECHNOLOGY AND DATA MANAGEMENT:

·        Operate and maintain computers for basic offline functions (word processing, data entry, file management).

·        Use online and other connected communication equipment and media.

·        Operate and maintain audio visual equipment.

·        Use map and compass/charts for orientation and navigation as well as operate a Global Positioning System (GPS) (and related applications) for orientation, navigation and other field applications.

RECORDS AND REPORTING:

·        Make regular verbal and written reports to the Head Ranger and/or Manager.  These include weekly surveillance-patrol reports, engine and boat check reports and visitor reports, among others.

·        Keep track of receipts and invoices for expenditures and other financial transactions.

ECOSYSTEM UNDERSTANDING AND PROTECTION:

·        Recognise and identify typical ecosystems, habitats, plant and animal species and their signs in the field and recognise threats and problems affecting biodiversity in the field. Accurately record and report observations of wildlife, habitats and ecosystems as required by manager.

·        Assist in the control, capture, handling and transportation of animals for relocation, population management, or invasive species control and with guidance from the Head Ranger and/or Manager, care for flora under protection in Protected Area.

  ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Uphold the good housekeeping of TIDE’s assigned workspace at the ranger station and cleanliness of island.

·        Actively participate in meetings and workshops related to the management of the protected area.

·        When needed you may be called upon to assist the managers of other TIDE protected areas.

·        Perform any other incidental and job-related duties as required and assigned by supervisor.

 

education and experience:

  1. A minimum of secondary school diploma.
  2. Fluency in English required.
  3. Fluency in Spanish desired.
  4. Good command of written English.
  5. Ability to work with a team and in a remote environment.
  6. Boating skills required.
  7. Driver’s license and Boat Captain skills, desired.
  8. Technology use: knowledge of SMART, GPS, drones, MS Office.
  9. Practical experience with GPS and marine/terrestrial navigation, preferred.
  10. First Aid Certification, preferred.
  11. Small engine repair experience desired.
  12. Knowledge of law enforcement desired.
  13. Professional work ethics, good public relations skills, self-motivated.
