SCMR Consultancies March 2026
Consultancy Opportunities: Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve (SCMR)
TIDE is inviting experienced consultants and research teams to contribute to cutting-edge marine science and conservation work in one of Belize’s most important marine protected areas.
These consultancies are part of a larger initiative to strengthen biodiversity conservation, improve fisheries sustainability, and support science-based management of the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve—an ecologically rich area within the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.
1. Commercial and Ecosystem-Based Fish Stock Assessment (pdf)
Help shape the future of sustainable fisheries management in southern Belize.
This consultancy focuses on conducting a comprehensive fish stock assessment across SCMR, including key commercial species such as conch, lobster, sea cucumber, and finfish. The work will generate critical data on species abundance, biomass, and ecosystem dynamics to inform management decisions and evaluate the effectiveness of marine reserve regulations.
Consultants will lead field surveys, stakeholder consultations, and data analysis, working closely with TIDE’s science team and local stakeholders. The results will directly support national and international conservation commitments while strengthening long-term monitoring systems.
Duration: Approximately 8 months
Outcome: Science-based recommendations for sustainable fisheries and improved marine reserve management.
2. Habitat Characterisation & Coral Reef Health Assessment (pdf)
Support the protection of coral reef ecosystems through science and collaboration.
This consultancy will deliver a comprehensive ecological and physical baseline assessment of coral reefs within SCMR. The work includes mapping habitats, assessing reef health using standardized methodologies, and identifying priority areas for monitoring and management.
Consultants will combine field surveys, GIS analysis, and stakeholder engagement to produce actionable insights that guide conservation planning and long-term reef monitoring.
Duration: Approximately 4–5 months
Outcome: Detailed habitat maps, coral reef health assessments, and recommendations to strengthen marine management.
Why This Work Matters
Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve is a biodiversity hotspot that supports livelihoods, protects coastlines, and sustains Belize’s fisheries and tourism industries. These consultancies will play a key role in ensuring that conservation efforts are grounded in strong science and inclusive collaboration.
